excellent picture

by a movie fan from Orangevale, CA USA on 2007-10-14
I got this projector to replace a Sony Cineza VPL-10 (I think it was designated), which was a superb machine for the price but had a serious annoyance - a noticeable screendoor effect when the camera panned across a homogeneous field (such as sky). Of course, I sit close to the screen, so this probably didn't bother everyone. The picture quality of this projector is astonishing. There is no screen door effect, even sitting 6 or 7 feet from the screen. You almost have to put your nose to the screen to even see the pixels. The contrast is much deeper; even very dark scenes are full of detail, and I have a window in my theater. The projector is indeed extremely quiet, compared to any other I've heard. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it highly. The only downside, I think, is that Sony has retained a rather poor remote, although they now provide an intelligent scanner of input signals so you don't have to cycle through everything (thank you!). There are also some lines above or below SD programming from DirecTV, but only on a few channels. I don't know if overscan controls will eliminate that (I haven't tried because I don't watch channels with bugs anyway).

Digital Noise Reduction Circuits: Reduces block noise and mosquito noise by using pixel-level filtering to reproduce a clean and clear picture. And Motion Vector Noise Reduction reduces just the noise in the video signal for video further reducing unwanted noise and blur artifacts. Digital Contrast Enhancer circuit: Improves contrast by enhancing all areas from dark to bright in parallel with texture control providing a three dimensional picture. Color Reality signal processing enables the expression of all the colors of life in vivid detail for dark and bright scenes. Details in dark areas of the picture are there, just like they are supposed to be. Sony vpl-vw40 projector review

by K. Morris from Downey, CA USA on 2010-02-03
This projector has allowed me to create truly the ultimate home theater system with a 140" image in 1080p (it can go all the way to 300" but my wall would only fit 140"). easy to install and maintain. The only draw back is the 1 year warranty. This is the difference between the vpl-VW60 has a 2 year warranty but its $2k more.

1080p front projection finally at an affordable price

by jpr from CO, USA on 2008-06-26
I picked up the Sony VPL-VW40 to replace an aging 720p VPL-HS51 that has worked pretty well for over 3 years. One warranty repair was needed on the HS51 for a problem with the blue filter about a year and a half in, and it's now out of warranty and was also about due for another lamp replacement so it seemed like a good time to upgrade. I was a little worried that the VW40 might not be bright enough since it reportedly has a little lower maximum light output than the Epson 1080UB (which I also looked at), but I shouldn't have been worried since I only project an about 85" image (small room). To me the VW40 actually looks slightly brighter than the HS51 if anything. The big difference, though, is in resolution and black level. The image is much sharper and more detailed, especially with a 1080p source. I think it even looks somewhat better on upconverted content. It's also quieter and I can't even hear the fan noise unless I listen carefully for it. One thing I struggled with a bit is the sheer size and weight of the VW40. It's a significant increase in both size and weight from the HS51 and I had to modify my home built ceiling mount to ensure it could handle it. It's over 24lbs while the HS51 was less than 13lbs. My reasons for choosing this model over the 1080UB include a couple of main factors. First, I've become accustomed to Sony projectors and I liked the similar features/connections/menus/etc. Secondly, the Sony is an SXRD (LCOS) projector vs the 3-LCD Epson. It has a sealed light path, so the need for a frequently replaced fine particle air filter is largely eliminated as is the danger of getting "dust blobs" in the picture. I've also heard some reports of convergence problems on the Epson. Otherwise, the performance of the projectors is very similar, with the Epson having a slight edge in maximum light output as well as black level, however both are so much better than the previous generation that the difference between them seems minor. So far I'm very pleased with the projector's performance, however, since it only comes with a 1-year warranty and my HS51 needed a warranty repair after more than 1 year I went ahead and got the extended warranty on this one, and would probably recommend that others do the same. As such you may want to factor that in to the total cost when comparing this unit with other models that may come with longer standard warranties (I believe the Epson has 2 years). I think you can even add the warranty to a refurbished unit if you want to make up for some of the extra cost, and Sony sometimes has an extra 10% off coupon for refurbished products.

Only one word.....AMAZING.....The picture quality, the blacks, the contrast....all excelent. Thanks to Sony for make another great product.

A+

by Andrew Patton from St. Louis, MO USA on 2008-05-17
Phenomenal. Compared to a 52XBR5, it bests it in just about everything minus that 120hz motionflow the xbr5 has. Great price, much quieter than my PS3 and/or my xbox 360, for it is just about inaudible. Colors do need some tweaking out of the box. I would recommend a calibration dvd. No screendoor effect allows me to sit 8 feet close to a 103" screen. Great flexibility as well.

I'm in Heaven

by J. carson from Highland, UT on 2008-02-10
I just hooked up my Sony vpl-vw40 projector and I'm very happy with it. I must admit that I have little experience and don't have an extensive comparison backround, but it is more that I had hoped for. Nice blacks, vibrant colors. Also a very simple remote with intuitive functions. I just had over 20 people over- we watched "Night at the Museum" on Blue ray with a superb full 1080 res and then "Crouching Tiger" on traditional DVD. Upscaling to 1080p was great. Not quite as good as the BlueRay but pretty dang good for making up info. Everyone was amazed at the clarity. I hooked it to a Denon AVR-2308CI Home theater A/V Receiver and Fluance(tm) 5 Speaker SXHTB+ Surround Sound Home Theater System SX-HTB+. The speakers just boggle me. So much for so little. Anyways- there's not any reviews I can see so far on this new projector, so hopefully this will be of use.Jim

This Projector Totally Rocks!!!

by A. Chin from on 2009-06-17
This projector is awesome! The picture quality is extremely crisp and clear compared to 2 previous projectors I used from InFocus and BenQ. I use this to show photos to customers. I also like the fact that it is sooooo quiet. Sometimes, you forget that it is even turned on. The controls are easy to navigate, and the remote is straight forward to understand. I have no gripes with this unit and would recommend it to everyone.

GOOD PROJECTOR.......BUT

by Michael Mcgriff from KY on 2009-03-03
I purchased my VPL-AW15 in November 2007. It has gone through three bulbs in a year......average life of bulb 350 hours. Far short of the 2-3,000 hours expected. This appears to be a known issue ([...]) but Sony denies any such problem. This is a great projector for the money if, and only if, you meet two requirements:1. You have total lighting control in the room (I do) and;2. You are lucky enough to get one that doesn't burn up lamps ($349.99) for no reason (I didn't).Good Luck!

Wünderbar

by Brian Lange from Chicago, IL on 2009-02-24
Like the others, I give this projector total props. I'm upgrading from a pretty bottom of the barrel SD Sanyo projector from about 5 years ago so this is ecstasy for me..."Prof Crazee" really posted an excellent review that sums up the pros and cons nicely. Of all of them, I would say the most noticeable is the "screen door" effect which isn't much of an issue assuming you're watching from a sane distance. Otherwise, I find it to be really quiet, I haven't sensed any signs of overheating at all, the start up and shut down are pretty quick. It provides lots of color, contrast, etc options in a very easy to understand menu interface. The colors and brightness produced is like watching a film in the theaters, and a very clean picture. It seems like a very versatile piece of equipment and well worth the money for what you're getting.I mounted this bad boy in my ceiling along with an elite screen and am in the process of getting speakers for a surround system. It's an awesome, cerebral, decadent experience having such a system in your own home. It's a cliche, but don't be surprised if friends start coming over more often than they used to. Or friends you never knew you had for that matter...

Had this projector for about a year, awesome.

by M. Kortz from on 2009-02-04
I read some of the other reviews on amazon and noticed that some people had some problems with their projector, and had to have it repaired. We bought ours almost a year ago and haven't had any problems. The projector also has around 1300 hours of use, and just today it asked me to replace the filter (it comes with a replacement filter, now I just have to find it). I realize sony doesn't post an official lamp life, but using the lamp on high power it hasn't begun to degrade the pic quality at all yet. I'm starting to think that we shouldn't have bought the warranty, I think it cost around $200 for a few years but I can't remember (but you should probably still buy it to be safe). It does come with a 2 year warranty from sony, but it's just not as convienent. Now here's the negative part. I could not imagine watching cable with this projector. I don't have cable, because I don't care for it. If I like a show, I rent the season from netflix. It does not operate very well in a very bright room. If you use the lamp on high like I do, you can get away with it during the day with the curtains pulled and the lights on (sunlight is a little too much for it). I just couldn't see someone watching the game with their buddies in the dark, tripping over stuff to grab a beer or a chicken wing. It does work very well during the day with the lights on, but it really shines at night. I've havn't seen a 720p lcd/plasma that can top this picture when you watch something in high def at night with no lights on. I have a friend with a 1080p plasma and I can just barely see a difference, not to mention my screen is 30 inches bigger than his (and he spent more money). The reason this projector works so well for me, and not for other people, is because I don't watch TV. I use it for games and movies. I don't have time to watch tv shows because my girlfriend and I live on our own, we both work and go to college full time. The game systems we have are the wii and the xbox 360. The wii doesn't support an hd signal, but if you use a component cable you can sqeeze a little more quality out of it (yea, it's dissapointing). But the 360 looks amazing, and up to this point, most 360 games deliver 720p anyway. And if they support 1080p, the vplaw15 converts it to 720p(this means you can use blue ray too) I love playing fps's like halo or cod4 with this thing. The last thing I'm going to ramble about is playing standard dvds. I've seen the upconvert dvd players at the store that make playing dvd's look like hd. Well this projector upconverts them to 720p the best it can. I can't beleive how great these "stone age technology" dvds look on this thing, even when blown up to 80 inches! And for those who are wondering what screen i use, I got the deal when they were giving away the sony dynaclear screen for free with the projector, and it looks perfect, except its supposed to be used on the floor. So we just folded the legs up and put it on our tv stand, while attaching it to the wall. The complaint I have for the screen is that it came with some minor wrinkles that weren't noticable. But over time they became noticeable during very bright, white scenes in movies and games. One last thing, obviously a good suround sound is definetly recommended. I have powerful system with 2 subwoofers.

Product not well built.

by Larry T. Gardner from Los Angeles, CA United States on 2010-07-28
I purchased this new sound "Projector" in February, 2010. Sound went completely dead suddenly, and now needs to be sent out for repairs--I could not fix problem using Manual for use. I consider this product both poorly build and unreliable, and I've been buying electronic sound products for 50 years.

best soundbar for the money

by D. Duong from Los Angeles, CA on 2010-07-01
pros: - best simulated surround for the money & space - looks good - price (the price has dropped significantly since its original release making the current price a bargain. - easy setupcons: - additional cost for mounting brackets - no sub-woofer included - 2 hdmi inputs (great for a simple setup but not enough for extensive systems) - complicated remote

Simply the best for the money

by Randy Maddon from BLAINE, WA, US on 2010-06-13
I have been investigating "sound bars" for close to two years. This unit is NOT a sound bar, its a sound projecter and there is a HUGE difference between the two. I owned a 200w 7.1 surround sound system (200w per speaker). While this unit does not replace the sound from that system it does sound incredible and is well worth the loss in sound quality for the freedom from wires and the speakers crowding my living room. I have compared over 30 different brands and listened to the offerings that are available. This is by far the biggest bang for your buck. I have not found any that can even compare to the sound quality from this unit. Plenty of connections and HDMI for most people and easy set up. Spend just a little time researching and I think you'll come back to this Yamaha. It's a winner.

Good sound, complex setup, poor design of inputs, DVD video does not pass through

by P. Li from MD, USA on 2010-04-16
1) Interms of sound quality, I am no audiophile. But I think the sound is good enough for my ears. I like the integrated design, so my entertainment center is not so cluttered.2) But the setup steps are very complicated. Maybe all of these systems are the same. But I bet a lot of people out there may be completely lost and intimidated by the thick book of instruction and tedious set up process.3) The input/output panel (where you plug all the wires) is poorly situated. You cannot see the inputs if you don't flip the system, which is very heavy. The input/outputs are all out of sight except the three HDMI plugs. Maybe Yamaha intentionally designed it this way so the cables are out of the sight. But it is in the back of the system. They are out of the sight anyway.4) The DVD video input has some problem. It does not pass the video signal to the TV. Basically I did as the instruction says: I connected my DVD player to the system (DVD video/audio out to the system), and I connected the system to my TV (system video/audio out to TV video/audio in). Audio works perfectly. But video does not get pass-through. I have no idea why. I also connected my Wii through Aux 1. That did not have any problem. Obviously I can connect the DVD video directly to my TV. But I want to use this system as the central gateway. And the system was designed to serve that purpose. I think the system has a malfunctioned DVD video input (the regular RCA video input/yellow colored).I am ordering component video cables to see whether that the video will pass through component video inputs. I will update you once I find out.

Introducing the world's first native 30,000:1 Contrast Ratio D-ILA Front Projector, the DLA-HD100. The DLA-HD100 brings Full HD to your home with the industry's highest native contrast ratio. The "native" means that it does not rely on an iris mechanism to maximize contrast depending on the average brightness of one scene. This technical sleight of hand employed on other projectors, effectivly changes overall luminosity, so that blacks are slightly bleached in bright scenes, while light colors appear duller in dark scenes. There is neither an iris mechanism nor a compromise in the DLA-HD100 projector. D-ILA is a mature technology, perfected by JVC, which can reproduce the brightest, most vivid colors simultaneously with the subtlest shadows, down to the deepest, truest blacks. Only D-ILA can reproduce in full the rich image information contained in a high definition source, be it broadcast or optical disk

Features

  • Three 0.7in Full HD D-ILA devices
  • Input signal capability - 1080p
  • 200W ultra high-pressure mercury lamp

Wonderful big screen pictures

by K. Godwin from New Zealand on 2005-08-10
This is an older model projector from Sony. Being an older model meant that the local store had it on sale for a fraction of the cost of the latest from Sony. The widescreen images from this projector are fantastic, crisp and clear with no noticable pixelation. Compared to other projectors in this price range this has outstanding features : - side shot, you can have the projector to the side ! - 3 LCD panels for a much better picture - 3-2 pulldown technology for cinema like pictures It also has a very nice remote control that is big and easy to use. If you can't afford the latest from Sony, beg, borrow or steal one of these ! Kevin
