Joybee is a joy

by DL from USA on 2010-08-31
I bought the BenQ Joybee GP! after reading many reviews. Size and weight are big considerations as I will be traveling with it frequently. This unit and it's giant power cord easily fit with my laptop and all my other stuff into my laptop case and didn't cause a stir going through security. Even so, I wish I had gone with the pico unit. The reason I went with this unit is because it has more lumens than the brightest pico unit I could find. The room did need to be darkened to see the pictures well, which can make it difficult for people to take notes during the presentation. The unit was simple to set up and worked perfectly with my Dell laptop. I haven't yet bought the cable to use it with the MAC. The focus is simple and the picture looks great even without a screen. I've showed Powerpoint shows on both a green wall and a yellow wall and the picture looked fine. So far, I am very happy with this cute little unit.

Weak lamp

by A. Sanchez from Miami, Florida USA on 2010-05-26
It does say that the room needs to be dark, but i never thought that it needed to be that dark. I have barely used this projector because the room conditions are not ideal, instead, i end up borrowing the company's.

This Projector Is So Cool That I'm a Little Giddy, Talking About It!

by April Blake from Genesee, PA on 2010-05-11
I like technology and gadgets to the point where I can use them but not have to think too much about them. No matter what cool features something has, if I have to read a detailed manual just to be able to turn the thing on, it'll sit in a box shoved all the way to the back of the closet, or I'll give it away to someone who likes to fiddle with stuff like that. Fortunately for the BenQ Joybee GP1 Mini-LED DLP Projector (What a moniker for such a cool little gadget- Let's call it "Joybee" from here on out!), it falls into the category of being intuitive enough not to need the direction book. As another reviewer pointed out, the booklet that comes along with it is worthless- literally stick-figure cartoons, no words, no real instruction or value besides being sort of cute, and I didn't even open the CD, which is sure to contain all kinds of information about the product I don't need to know. What I do need to know: Joybee is plug-and-go. You can learn a lot about its features by playing and discovering them for yourself. Now, I don't do any presentations right now that require me to bring along a projector, or even a posterboard pie-chart, so while I'm sure Joybee is super-useful for those kinds of things, what really made me joyful to the point of giddiness when I was trying out my Joybee for the Vine Program is that I can use it like a high-tech overhead projector for blowing up my artwork (either created on the computer or by hand and scanned in and put on a USB drive) so I can trace the lines and make things like a 3-foot by 5-foot sign, or to paint a mural on a wall. Joybee says it's tripod-compatible, and it lives up to that claim. Besides the tripod, you don't need any fancy equipment to get the projector at the right height or angle, and if you're looking at this projector to buy it, you probably already have a tripod. For my needs and wants for a projector, Joybee's light is bright enough, it has just enough features, enough versatility to connect to other devices, and it doesn't waste time or space with a bunch of bells and whistles that would clutter up its simplicity. I like that there isn't a bulb to worry about having to replace- LEDs are the way to go!I'm sure there are more powerful, more advanced, more et cetera projectors out there, but if you're like me, and you just want something that's simple to use, super-portable, even a little cute (okay, a lot cute- design matters!) Joybee's a good fit, and I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend it!

Big things DO come in small packages.

by reg from Houston on 2010-04-20
I am not up to date on most electronics. Fortunately, I have children. My daughter worked as a catering manager in a major Houston hotel. AV equipment was needed for many of the meetings she organized. She is now a college professor, so she uses that equipment herself, now. She was the one I called on to help me evaluate the BenQ Joybee GP1 Mini-LED DLP Projector. The first thing she said is that this is much smaller than the equipment she has used. She found it very easy to set up. She had never connected one through the computer before, but found this one was very easy to do. She said she didn't think this would work in a large setting, like a ballroom, but would work very well in a smaller setting like a meeting room or a classroom. Her one complaint about the device is that it gets very hot. - both the unit and the power cord. Her overall impression of the projector was very good. She said I may not get it back!

W6000 is great!

This is by far the best bang for the buck I've had in my AV experience. I was astounded with the brightness and image quality.

Super bright, super blacks amazingly quiet!

by M. Mitchell from Cecilia, Kentucky United States on 2010-03-02
We have owned an Optoma 1080p for two years before purchasing the W6000. We project on a gray wall with a screen size larger than 120 inches, ceiling mount. We use it for watching movies and playing PS3 games. The BenQ blows the Optoma away with crisp brightness yet no rainbows or loss of blacks (gotta love dlp). Also virtually no aliasing. There is considerable set-up time if you are really picky about colors and contrast - but at least you have the choice. The fan noise was unnoticeable especially compared to the Optoma...I was afraid it wasn't working correctly at first. Much cooler, much quieter, better picture = worth the price.Additional note: We have become a house divided...I like the Benq handling of motion, but my 28 year old son does not. We both agree that it is crisper, brighter and quieter than the Optoma but we are going to begin looking for a different projector that we both can love.Resolved! The motion problems were a result of a setting on the PS3. For games the motion was normal but for movies it was strange...not blurry, but odd. We changed a setting on the PS3 from 24 frames to 60 Hz(?)and now everyone agrees that this projector is perfect.

Terrific projector, but one flaw for me

by Paul E. Heroy from Durham, NC USA on 2010-02-27
I've been using a front projection setup for several years now, starting with a serendipitous purchase of an NEC LT150 that was a "price mistake" find. After getting it and figuring out how to mount it, put up a screen and run cables in the ceiling with a friend's help, I've been hooked on the true theater type experience that a projector provides. It was a dim, loud, business class projector but still a thrill to have a 100" picture. I upgraded over the years to a brighter NEC business projector, then finally entered real home theater projector land with a 1080p Optoma HD80. At the time, the HD80 was one of the best bang for the buck projectors ever made, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. One of the things that bugged me with the NEC business projectors was the dreaded DLP "rainbow effect", and with the HD80 that was minimized enough that it never really bothered me. I'm fairly sensitive to it, apparently, and could force myself to see it on the HD80 but only by unnatural things like shaking my head.Unfortunately after 2 1/2 years the HD80 died, and I decided to look around for new models since 1080p has become the standard, and less of a premium feature. The Benq W6000 was high on my radar because it's one of the very few moderate priced DLP models that includes lens shift. Its brightness is another attribute I liked since I have a "living room HT" without full light control, and the extra brightness is great for those afternoon football games. I ended up buying an Epson 8100 LCD unit locally, and the W6000 here, and compared them (eventually adding a Sony SXRD model to the mix to hit all 3 major projector technologies). The Benq lived up to its billing, producing a very bright, dynamic picture. After some tweaks to the initial base settings, I was pretty happy with the overall picture, colors, black level etc. As another reviewer noted, Dynamic Black seemed to cause a little to much iris noise so I also turned it off, and didn't notice much difference in the overall picture. But one problem came back... rainbows. The color wheel is actually only a 4x speed, as opposed to the 6x speed that the HD80 used. In addition, extra brightness seems to make ANYTHING more noticeable, rainbows included. After a couple of weeks, I just couldn't live with it and ended up returning it. If you're not sensitive to this artifact, the W6000 is a fantastic projector. I really, really wanted it to work for me but ended up paying more for the SXRD unit (Sony VPL-HW15). (I wasn't overly impressed with the Epson 8100, though it's a lower priced model so not a really fair comparison - I wish I'd been able to find an 8500 to try instead.)

Much Better than my old Sony VPL-HS51

by Greg from Iowa City, IA United States on 2010-01-28
I set this up last night. I made no changes to the color. My wife, son and his friend each were blown away by the better picture than we had with our Sony. Brightness is a key issue for us as our screen is 215 inches diagonal.

A Most Frustrating Mixed Bag!!!!

by E. Milan from So. Cal. USA on 2010-01-25
I purchased this projector earlier in January directly from Benq. Upon initial physical inspection I'd say this is a large projector, a little plasticky and funky looking with a mostly black box a dark purple shinny insert and the unneserarily oversized lense attachment for zoom/focus....ok now for the real disapointment..as previously reviewed everywhere you need to spend a bit of time 3:30 hrs in my case to dial in all the colors properly...once that is done..."WOW" what a beautiful picture, in one word "Awesome", when compared with the LCD it was replacing. At once I noticed the LOUD fan noise..this unit sits directly above the front row of seats which is "my sweet spot", not to mention the misterious BUZZ sound that I identified as the Dinamyc Iris....Yes everytime the picture fades to black or dark scenes...ZZIIIPPPP...I found out the way to get rid of this distraction was turning dinamyc black off doing this affected the black levels and the pop factor in the picture, however not in a major way....but still... I could not enjoy a quiet night movie with all that racket!..my honest opinion is that for $2500.00 even though the picture was great, it is not worth the annoyance cause by it's noisy behaviour...so back to benq it went. I would find it hard to recommend this projector based solely on it's picture quality...there is more to a good projector than that....in my opinion.

Excellent Affordable Projector

by Benson2175 from on 2010-08-06
I've had this now for a few months and every time I use it I'm reminded how worth it is. I've got it paired with a 12' wide roll down screen and a Playstation3 and the picture is simply amazing. It works best in a dark room but I can use it in the day with the blinds drawn and a bright setting and it's just fine. I don't go to movie theatres anymore and just wait for stuff to come out on Blueray. It's the only way to watch movies or play video games. If you use it out of the box the pre set settings aren't actually the best for movies, they're good for Games and TV but in blueray films the skin tones look all weird. Here's a link to a web site with a very good calibration for movies. [...] Which brings me to the menu, it's not the most intuitive but once you set it up once, you don't have to go back and you can switch between modes using one button on the remote. The remote is good; all the buttons light up and all the controls are available. It's not programmable though and won't control any other components. Noise wise the unit is very quiet unless it starts to get too hot. At first I had it set up in a cabinet and the fan would go full blast, now it's on the ceiling and I don't hear it. When I first got it, I suffered from colour wheel effect; when you see rainbows in high contrast scenes. This had me really worried as it was kind of unacceptable, but after a while I stopped noticing it and now have forgotten about which is apparently what happens. But be warned; if you invite friends to watch something, they might complain about seeing rainbows. Probably they're just jealous because they spent double or triple on a flat screen TV to have a much smaller and worse picture.

Very good Home Theater projector

by barrios49 from on 2010-07-04
The projector perform better than my expectations, with the default setting out of the box the picture has very good colors and the clarity is excellent. I will say that after the burn in time of the lamp the projector has a much better color and contrast. I bought an Optoma HD20 before this and had to returned because of an overheating problem. So far I had have no problems with this and is a very quiet projector compare to the HD20. The light output is very good but limited to a complete dark room. I did not see the rainbow effect.

BenQ W1000

by Gymane Moody from on 2010-06-15
I've owned this projector for a month and a half. It has worked flawlessly with no issues to speak of. It's quieter than my Optoma HD65 with a much brighter and vivid picture. With a little or a lot of patience you can tweak the color and image to what ever floats your boat. The W1000 has terrific color and depth, along with sharpness I've come to really appreciate. This unit does use a 2 times speed color wheel. Those sensitive to RBE may want to look at the HD20 or Vivitek. A LCD projector could be your best bet if you're very sensitive to RBE. The great thing about amazon is the satisfaction guarantee. This is a VERY bright projector! At the present time it is the brightest 1080P projector available under 3 grand. This gives you more leeway for ambient light to be present in the room. You can eat at the dinner table and still enjoy your movie or show without trying to eat in the dark because your image is washed out by the ambient light.I like the fact this unit has its own speaker. My nephew loves to play Xbox. We just plug the Xbox directly to the projector and off we go! Nothing like playing video games on a large screen. The speaker is plenty loud enough without disturbing others in the home.I've spent many hours tweaking and calibrating the picture. Here's a few settings that may or may not help you. I've found it to give me the best balance of color, brightness and contrast so far. These are settings with the projector 14 ft from the screen with lens wide, lamp hrs of 216 and 120 inch Favi matte white high gain screen. Black levels and contrast will deepen as lamp ages. 100 hrs of burn-in will make a difference for the better in skin tones and black levels.User 2 settings with (cinema mode) Color temperature fine tuning User settings: (normal)Brilliant Color turned offLamp in Econo modeGamma: 2.0 or 2.2 (which ever looks best to you)White peaking : 1Brightness: 393D color management: Cyan Hue 0 saturation 110 Gain 90Magenta Hue 0 saturation 110 Gain 130Yellow Hue 0 saturation 110 Gain 110Red Hue 0 saturation 100 Gain 130Green Hue 0 saturation 140 Gain 140Blue Hue 0 saturation 100 Gain 140Clarity control: Default settings didn't change them at all.Contrast, Color, Tint, Flesh tones and Sharpness all 0.I hope this helps at least one person out there.Peace

First Product From BenQ!

by EDZ VON D from on 2010-06-12
I have to say that this product is simply amazing! out the box I was pleased with the picture quality and I had to do minimal tweeking to make it look "custom!" I quickly hooked up my Ps3 and played Season 20 of the Simpsons Disc 2, The HIGH DEF episodes and let me say that it just blew me away; granted I was projecting an image of about 90inches or so and the wall had minor imperfections. The brightness is acceptable and was perfectly watchabe with the lights on. I set the lamp mode to economy, and let me say that there is a slight difference in brightness, but that will net you another 1000 hours of life, granted it the lamp doesn't go before that! The look of the projector is elegant white leather texture and look just perfect! I do have one complain though, there is no lense cover, as we all know the lenses are rather fragile and prone to scratches. I am quite happy for my purchase!

Best projector I have owned yet!!

by Joseph Miller from Davisburg, MI on 2010-06-08
This projector I am using right now I have my computer hooked up to it thru a onkyo 1007 and it is fantastic. Brightest projector you will find at this resolution and price range. Plays movies beautifully and games like no other. Handles HD and non hd with ease. I have had it and used it for 1800 hours so far and the bulbs are good for 4000 but just like a light bulb they can go at any time.A few things people need to know for a long life span is 1. Do not turn on if your only gonna use it an hour or less. 2 Do not turn off and on the projector shortens life span. 3. Do not use during a thunderstorm ever seen a light bulb glow brighter and then later burn out?I turn mine on and use it every night for atleast 8 hours a day. I have never had a bulb blow on me ever outta the three I have had. I even went over the lifespan on my second one buy 1800 hours!!Bulbs go bad usually in the first 100 hours if they are gonna prematurely go unless you do what I said not to above. I have it on a 120" screen and I could not be happier. Also if they give you a replacement bulb make sure you use it, after your first bulb has 100 hours on it use the second for 100 hours1 Its the right bulb :P 2 It will make it past the 100 hour mark. Also just so ya know how long and I do have it I was the first to have this projector and reviewed it on AVS forum you can see it here.[...]Hope this helps thanks :) Joe

I have an Epson 705HD ,and 3 months later friend of main has this Benq. Obviously the black levels and color saturation is amazing ,and much much better that my Epson. My next projector will be Viewsonic 6531w or Benq W1000 ;). DLP rules over LCD in this budget sector!

This projector is NOT 3D ready

by P. Goetz from Virginia, USA on 2010-03-26
This projector is described as 3D ready, but it's not. Take a look at the manual (pdf included on Amazon's page). It has "3D color management," which has nothing to do with "3D ready"The price should also be a tipoff. Please ignore the 3 stars I gave it, as a rating is required to do a post, and I don't want to give it high or low marks. I don't blame the product, just whoever wrote the incorrect description.
