Good concept. Not practical.

by Paul Seekins from on 2010-09-03
While LED pocket projectors are a good concept, they still don't hit the mark. The 3M MPro150 was a big disappointment for me. I bought this projector to use in my office to display documents and presentations during discussions, however even with all the lights extinguished (I have no external windows) performance was weak. The ambient light coming through my glass door window was enough to dim the output of the unit enough for it to be unreadable. If we lived in a world without lights, this little gadget would probably rate higher, but we don't and it doesn't. With a maximum output of only 15 lumens, your viewing area has to be near dark in order to see the image with any clarity, even then the image seems to be spotted with out of focus area's. You notice this more when you try to project a document that has a lot of text (yes I did clean the lens). But this was not the worst feature for me. When the MPro150 is attached to the included tripod, it becomes back heavy and very unstable. This issue is magnified when you try to attach the video and power cables to the back. The thing just doesn't want to stand up....even with the legs splayed a good distance. I think that this issue could have been reduced if 3M would have made the tripod attachment in the middle or towards the back of the unit to counter the load of the attached cables. I will be trying another type of mini tripod to see if this problem can be eliminated. On a positive note, the MPRO150 is a sleek and fashionable design and the unit comes with a multitude of goodies including; multi-country power adapter connectors, various audio connectors and a bag to protect the unit (which doesn't quite fit). So, if you are a consumer looking for an LED alternative to a traditional lamp projector, this 15 lumen paperweight will not do it for you. I would wait until 3M has resolved the counter-balance problems and increased the lumens to over 50 or go with one of the bigger LED models that pack a more serious lumen output. The Optoma PK301 Pico Pocket Projector puts out 50 lumens for around $80 more in the same form factor as the 3M. I will be swapping mine for the PK301.Great concept that falls short on practicality and performance.

Sure, I've got a bias, but...

by Eric D. Overton from Austin, TX USA on 2010-09-01
Okay... I have a bias, and I'll admit it. I'm an engineer by trade, and I've worked on the design of Picoprojectors for 3M. So I know what goes into them all the way down at the silicon level. There are several approaches to getting pixels up on a screen using as little power as possible (mostly having to do with how you turn the LED's in the "lamphouse" on and off more quickly than the eye/brain can notice that they're flashing). There are also ways in which you can turn them on sequentially in red, green, and blue to illuminate what's actually a monochrome display module -- and then let the brain reassemble the three mono-colored images into the full color picture you think you see. What differentiates this projector from a number of others on the market was the amount of time 3M put into asking a fundamental question a lot of other people didn't: "How is the human eye and brain combination -- which is a part of the system -- stimulated most effectively by light so that the perceived quality of the overall picture is highest?"I should note that I'm not a 3M employee, I'm part of an engineering consulting business that does work with 3M. (A great company to have as a client, BTW...) But I've done video systems designs for dozens of people over the years. And 3M had their act together on this project to a greater degree than just about anybody I can think of.

Not sure about this product

by E. Bunts from on 2010-08-05
I was looking at this item and then some others offered here at Amazon. I found that some of the other brands had a much higher lumens, one had 20 lumens and another had 33 lumens. This device is said to project up to 50 in. One of the other models I looked at said their product projects up to 60 in. Thats 10 in. more viewing area. All the models I looked at so far is in the same or close to the price of this model.I suggest anyone looking to buy a pocket project, shop around and compare prices, brightness, viewing area, ect., all pocket projectors are not the same or same standards.

It a toy!

by Wade from on 2010-07-14
It's not worth much more than $20. The wire from the computer is stronger than the stand and projector together. I was embarased during my presentation when when the stiff connecting wire would flex and the lightweight projector would fall over. Image projected is very dim. Don't try projecting if there is any sunlight in the room. What good is a slim carry bag for just the projector if you have to carry all of the millions of cables and parts included in another case? Spend the extra money and buy the real projector. Thank you to Amazon for their great return policy!

Oo's & Ahh's

by S. Yates from Dallas, Texas on 2010-06-25
We bought 2 of these projectors for our sales team and we love them!! This projector features 640x480 resolution and 15 lumens. There is 1Gb memory built in plus a micro-SD slot which can display photos, videos and office documents. 3M recently won an Edison Award for their projector innovation. This projector does everything we need it to. The bonus is I always get oo's and ahh's when I pull this tiny miracle out of my bag.

3M Pocket Projector

by JBW from Metro Maryland on 2010-09-06
This little projector needs to be taken back to the drawing board for updating and fixing. It's a great size, a nice price, but for displaying PowerPoint, pictures or dvd's,(isn't that its purpose?) it just doesn't cut it at all. I'd rather pay more (I did, after I returned this one) and get something serviceable. The projected image was grainy and ridiculously dark; the bulb doesn't have nearly enough lumens. Super idea, 3M - just rethink, retool and redo before you inflict this on the public....

Deceptively Useful

by David L. Winkel from St. Louis, MO on 2010-06-15
I found the concept of a projector that could fit in your pocket intriguing. The price was reasonable, if it worked and 3M is a reputible company. Fifteen lumins didn't seem like a lot, but for my needs I figured it might work. The packaging was fist rate. It comes with a cute little tripod. I use it with my notebook when giving personal presentations. I have a 13" notebook so it is cozy to share the screen. In low light it works GREAT. Full light, not so much. The speakers were a surprise, they greatly enhance the ones on my notebook.Overall I recommend this product. The only thing I'd like to see is a roll-up 14" X 17" screen, with stand that could be folded to approximately the same size.

by J. Pace from Kissimmee, FL, US on 2010-06-05
Could not get it to work with the iPhone which was what I needed. Would not recommend.

it is a good product

by Mihriban Gulistan from on 2010-02-28
It is a really light and useful projector. It came on time and in good condition. The only thing is it makes noise.

Not bright enough

by Geoff from on 2010-02-08
Everything about this is quality except one thing, too dim to see pictures unless room pitch black....I would not recommend buying any of these LED projectors until they imporve the technology as this is supposed to be the best of breed.

Bargain buy, AWESOME picture

by Joey Wiggins from on 2010-08-30
I've been an LCD flat panel fan since they first came out, but I wanted something for a media room in my house that the previous owners finished out and was just wasting away. What better than a 92-inch screen? Found it with the Optoma HD20. Awesome picture for the price of a 50 inch 720p plasma, and this is 1080p! I am very pleased.

Dedicated home theater room projector

by LiveLaugh&Golf from on 2010-08-25
I performed a ceiling mount installation with a 13' throw which produced a 115" 16:9 screen. What can I say, it's beautiful, bright even with a fair amount of room lighting, colors are wonderful, quiet, and doesn't seem to have issues with a 25' hdmi connection. I thought hard about a mitsu or epson projector of similar image quality ratings but after reading some of the early bulb blowing stories I'm happy I went with this Optoma HD20. Best on the market for under $1500 if you ask me.

Don't buy any Optoma projectors

by OB21 from on 2010-08-24
This is the second Optoma projector I bought. The first projector was a HD72. When the projector is mounted from the ceiling the lamp becomes loose (due to heat and gravity) and the picture will go out. This is a design flaw which was supposedly fixed with the new Optoma HD20. Unfortunalety I trusted Optoma and bought the HD20. Big mistake! Only after 16 hours of use, the HD20 is doing the exact same thing as the HD72. Picture goes out after a couple of minutes. I am in the process of returning the HD20 and I just bought a Mitsubishi HC3800.

Are you kidding me? AWESOME!!!!

by -MM- from Chicago, IL on 2010-08-09
This thing is an AMAZING value.I ordered the Optoma HD20 on Wednesday night with free super saver shipping and the thing arrived on Friday morning!I popped this thing out of the box and put it on the universal projector mount that the previous owner had left on the ceiling of our house.I then hooked up the HDMI input to our HDDVR cable box and WOW! The picture quality for under $1000 is amazing! It takes a few minor adjustments to get the thing focused and if the mount isn't mounted exactly centered to your screen you will get the standard one corner higher than the other. Nothing you can do about this leveling wise, so just get it the best you can or re-center the screen or projector (depends on if being off by 1 inch on a 300 inch screen bothers you).Long story short after about an hour of messing with the mount in order to get it they way I wanted (nothing to do with the projector) I had this thing displaying AMAZING 8 foot by 5 foot 1080 HD programming. For less than a $1000 this thing blows away my 52 inch Samsung LCD (also purchased off Amazon, and I also think is a great product).I highly recommend this to anyway who has the space. HD programming and / or blu-ray is a must for this projector and sports are really great. This thing is especially good if you have a larger room where you don't feel like you are on top of the screen. Hope you have as much luck with it as I have so far. Enjoy!

great starter projector!!!

by LoreBlob from on 2010-08-07
As a total projector newbie, I did some research on reputed review sites as well as amazon and came up with the Optoma20. It works fantastically well. i do not have a receiver but i just hooked it up to a pair of computer spearks through the projector's audio output. Awesome for DVDs, extremely sharp and bright color, and that's saying something: we live in a loft apartment where it is impossible to black out the entire space, and we have a lot of light pollution at night through the loft windows via the busy street outside. It is still possible to watch movies comfortably. one day i suspect people will start putting lawn chairs outside our window and watch with us.

Compact and easy to use

by M. Moneymaker from Seattle WA USA on 2010-08-26
Very compact and portable, and easy to plug in and get started! Good image and color, just need to be in a dark space. My first LG purchase, will consider more products by them. Splashed 10' wide image onto wall of house outside, and this little LED projector performed great. Don't forget to pull off the shrink wrap clear cover, I almost missed it and it could heat up your projector. Highly recommended.

Really good, except for tripod mount

by innovator from on 2010-08-16
This item is exactly what it was described as. It is a very portable lightweight, and easy to use projector. The image quality and brightness is as good as it could be given its lumins.I am happy with the purchase except for the plastic threaded hole for a tripod mount which stripped on the 3rd use. now I have to make a make shift attachment. But if you are not using it on a tripod, then it is all good.

LED rock

by Polar from CA, USA on 2010-08-12
I give it a four star as I only use it for a few hours. Good brightness, I can see the picture under day light. Can connect Bluray, DVD, PC and pcituer quality is good. When I got the package, I am amazed by it's samll size and light weight. After I turn it on, the pictuer came up quite quick and picture quality is very acceptable without any adjustment. I don't read manual at all and the on screen menu is easy to use.Overall a nice LED projetor that fulfill all my need.

Very nice

by RC from Louisiana on 2010-07-17
I use this for outdoor parties and plan to use it this halloween to project videos out my window. The projector is easy to set up, and looks amazing when using the HDMI in HD. I wasn't too sure how good the video quality would be but I was blown away the first time I used it. All my friends could not get over how good the video looked, very happy with this item and well worth the money. The only set back is you have to use distance for screen size, you cannot adjust the video size without moving the projector either closer of further away from what you are projecting on. This is not a big deal for me but could be for someone else. Over all this is a great product.

very good so far

by S. Kim from new jersey, USA on 2010-05-28
this is my second projector - first one with XGA. lumens if very bright and XGA gives more clear view than before.good price for this level of lumen/xga standard.only draw i see is - for my old one, after connecting power cord, i can turn 'on' with a switch - this one doesn't have any switch, so plug the cord, it's connected. (it still have 'power' button to start fan/bulb) also, for old one, when i turn off fan/bulb (hitting power button, twice, power light was flashing until it all settled down - once it's steady, i can turn off the power with a switch, disconnect power cord. for this one, blinking light is always there, so can't see when it's turned off (of course, yu can see bulb is off since nothing projected out of projector).turn on/off time is very fast, though.

Bright and good quality

by Yuan-tai Lee from Murphy, TX on 2010-02-22
This projector is good on image quality and brightness. However, the projection angle control is not that easy. I put it at high level and the projection angle is too high for me.

Impressed so far!

by P. Belik from CA USA on 2010-01-08
Just received the Optoma EX532 today. Impressive image quality and the 2800 lumens is plenty bright enough to work in my living room with the lights on - pretty cool. Also, the projector is extremely quiet. Smaller and lighter than I expected too - pretty awesome for $550. Have no idea how it will withstand the test of time but very impressed with the projector for the 2 hrs I've played with it.

I purchased this unit to be used in a classroom setting with my 10" Netbook. The 2800 lumens works very well in a daylight environment with brilliant color images. Great Low Priced DLP Projector

by Natalia Peterson from on 2009-11-21
PROS: This projector was purchased to replace my old Proxima Projector with a burnt out bulb. (Same cost for new projector vs. replacement bulb) I have it ceiling mounted at 14' from screen with a 96" diagonal screen. The picture is large and bright. The setup was very quick once you realize to use the arrow keys in the middle and not the ones on top. Use the "Auto" Setting for picture size and you'll always have the largest picture when switching from TV to DVD. The projector has a 3k lamp life in Bright mode and 4k in Normal. Bright is great for daytime viewing, but Normal is more than enough for Night time viewing. The projector will also give you a warning when your within 30 hours of the end of the buld life. Overall Great Picture Quality and Size especially for the price.CONS: I didn't know that you need a special adaptor when doing a Ceiling Mount. My old projector was mounted with 1 screw and the Optima projector requires a 3 Screw mounting plate adaptor. (Needs to be purchased seperately)

Great Projector

by Zane from Maryland on 2010-09-06
We finally decided to upgrade our projector and purchased this one from Amazon.com. We look the clarity of the picture and you do not even have to invest in expensive cables to connect it, unless you just want to. We used a basic red, white, yellow cable and it is phenomenal.

Great projector for home theater

by K. Kirkland from on 2010-08-03
Me an a buddy both bought one of these projectors, so I have seen two in use in two different environments. I have mine in a basement that allows me to control the lighting where his is in his living room that has a lot of ambient light during the day. The projector exceeds expectations in the dark and is above average in the daytime. It still is a projector so direct light will kill the picture. The fan can be heard, but once the move/game/tv is playing you will not notice. I also painted my wall instead of buying a screen. I would suggest a gray color not white for this projector. Behr silverscreen is a good choice. Something like an eggshell. It really helped the colors pop.Lastly, Amazon is promoting this as a 120hz, it is not the same as a 120hz tv. 120hz is only available through vga cable and at a certain resolution. Don't expect the 120z while using a blu-ray. I didn't take off a star because the manufacturer doesn't advertise it as a feature, just amazon.

Not What you may think

by DP from on 2010-07-13
if you are looking to hook this up to your blue-ray 3D Player of Playstation for 3D gaming- think again. This is not set up fpr any of the above. It only works via your computer and it requires Nvida 3D package. If you are looking for the same thing I am then do not waste your time with this machine.

a great projector for business presentation, not excellent for home theater

by MDguy from on 2010-07-03
The projector is flawless for business presentation, class room, but not excellent for home theater. The brightness is super, the sound is great, and the images from computers were awesome, however, while used for playing movies, only very high quality DVDs produce great pictures. Most of our VCDs, DVDs just gave poor images. Digital TV is OK, but color is not very vivid and not natural. We had wished to buy this projector to substitute a plasma/digital TV, but this projector is not there yet. If you want to buy one for presentation, you will not regret for buying it, for home entertainment, you might have to seek other options, such as those 1080p projectors.

Simply Blown Away!!!

by 180onthewall from ottawa on canada on 2010-06-29
Let me start off by saying that when i buy something i study it hard before i buy it to make sure that i make the right descion, i settle on the viewsonic pjd6531w, and am i ever happy i did!! right out of the box the picture looked awsome!! and i received it in the morning at work so when i got home for lunch the first thing i did was set it up, even on a beige wall the picture was sharp! when i got home i put it in the spare room on a white wall , setup the surround system and popped in a bluray into the ps3, and i was blown away!!!! the colors, the sharpness, and the jaw dropping size of the screen was simply breath taking! i seriously had to do nothing , not one adjustment but to the keystone due to angle on bookshelf, if you are looking for a projector you will not be dissapointed with this one! oh and the 3d is great too!! i feel like i can jump into the screen!

Wow what a projector!

by John Werner from on 2010-09-06
This is my second projector, the first being about 7 years old. This Optima is amazing - I use it with a 104 inch screen in a multi-media family room not dedicated to home theater. My use is in partial light, and with 2,500 lumens, this Optima HD66 blasts through the ambient light without a problem. Just watched a college football game starting @ noon in HD and we're amazed with the quality and enjoyment of the game.Highly recommend for the quality and the price.John

Not for NVIDIA 3D Vision!

by jjRobotek from Long Island, NY on 2010-09-06
I got this PJ Specifically for the 3D about a week ago. It seems to have issues with NVIDIA 3D vision. The 3D vision set up software Will not recognize the projector unless a Driver(inf)for Acer H5360 is used.Optoma says it needs a firmware update, I dont want to send a brand new PJ in for an update..It looks great in 3D but due to the issue above I wish I had gotten the Acer H5360 for less money.I'm Running on a 100" screen and 3D blu ray - games like Just Cause 2 and 3d HD videos look fantastic. Will make due until someone releases a cheap 1080P 3D PJ so I can dump this.

HT Projector review

by Robert Yazell from Nevada City, California, US on 2010-08-31
Needed a projector for both data presentations and video applications. This does both well. Very bright image. Not the greatest for use as a home theater projector because of dark levels, but acceptable, especially in a room with a lot ambient light. Compact and convenient for travel. Build quality is typically Chinese, but performance is good. Wish it had a little better zoom range for the projection lens - you need to set up the projector in a spot that matches the screen location, rather than having the flexibility to put the projector in a more convenient spot. This is the norm for the low cost projectors. The 3D referred to is not suitable for the current 3D technology as it applies to home theater.

Great picture quality for 1/4th the price of similar quality HDTV

by Chris De Cali from Boston, MA on 2010-08-27
This year, I moved into a suite with three roommates. As geeks and audiophiles, we were searching for a solution that could couple amazing 720p, 1080p picture with our 7.1 surround sound for under $1000. After visiting every possible electronics dealer for a discounted, new fangled 120Hz 1080p LCD TV under $1000, we gave up and took to the web to find solutions. That's when we found the Optoma HD66.Based on previous reviews, videos on YouTube, and the projector's specifications, we decided to give this guy a try. Now, after receiving this bad boy just a few days ago, I can tell you we made the first right decision of our college careers. Not only does this projector throw a beautiful 720p or 1080p from a .mkv or Blu-Ray source but it is very easy-to-use for the simple geek. We have yet to try games on it but every movie we have seen on this has wow'd us in terms of quality. We also currently project it on a wall in our living room which has eggshell paint. Therefore, we have yet to see it on a proper screen. Regardless, the image, the throw, and the make of the model has impressed us enough to keep it over any sort of HDTV solution. Currently, we use the HDMI and optical audio inputs as well as the VGA to achieve best picture resolution and quality. However, I will keep viewers updated after we have successfully mounted and constructed a screen. That setup is probably the best way to achieve greatest picture clarity and color for this type of projector.
