The difference between halogen and metal halide bulbs

Projector bulbs generally fall under two categories, halogen and metal halide bulbs. The type of projector decides the type of projector lamp that a consumer should buy.

Halogen Bulbs

A halogen light bulb has a tungsten filament, any noble gas, and a little bit of halogen in a transparent quartz case. It emits a bright yellowish light, which makes reading easier without causing much strain to eyes. They are 10 – 20 % more energy efficient and less expensive. Halogen bulbs are used in low to medium-priced projectors. Their life span typically ranges between forty and seventy hours. A halogen bulb always maintains a uniform brightness throughout its life.

Metal Halide Bulbs

Metal halide bulbs are better known for their long life, versatility, high efficiency, excellent color rendering, and compact size. They emit an extremely white light, which may sometimes appear bluish. These lamps are used in medium to highly-priced projectors. The most striking feature about a metal halide bulb is that, it lasts for about 1000 to 2000 hours.

A halogen light bulb has a lesser life span when compared to a metal halide bulb. The halogen light bulb displays a consistent brightness all through its life, but the brightness of the metal halide bulb keeps diminishing over time. (It drops by half after 1000 hours.)
