Best Money I spent in a LONG time
I just recently bought my Tx-SR608 to upgrade my aging Denon AVR-465. I have been looking at Yamaha's for a long time and was considering of buying one when I ran across the Onkyo on here and the price was UNBEATABLE.
I was in the process of revamping my home theater setup. I removed my bluray player and substituted it with an HTPC setup with a bluray burner so that I can backup my media collection onto my network. Once the Onkyo came in the setup process was quite easy and really intuitive.
One thing that you have to do is figure out the sitting positions that you are using throughout your room for viewing TV, Movies and such. The Audissey will ask you to hold a mike at an ear level in all the places where people sit to view the TV for optimal sound setup.
Once I was done with Audissey, the receiver configured my speakers automatically even though they are 10 year old Technics speakers I bought with my first receiver. I plugged in all of my devices into the unit, including an HTPC, Xbox360, Wii, VCR (yes, they work with this too) and Cable Box and they worked like a charm.
I even managed to set up the 2nd zone for my back yard which was very easy to figure out and work. One quick reminder though if you are planing to do a Zone 2 setup. The 2nd Zone only supports analog input so make sure you run RCA cables from all of your sources into the assigned place on the receiver. Even though you have HDMI or Optical input in the receiver already the unit has Analog to Digital Converter but bit a Digital to Analog one to convert your sound from the inputs already used. Setting it up this way will not degrade the quality of sound in your primary zone. The unit uses the digital signal for video and audio on the primary zone so all you are doing is adding the audio signal for the 2nd zone.
This way I can turn my radio to listen to the game sipping margaritas in the back yard and my wife can watch her shows on the TV on the inside... to tell you the truth, this thing might make my marriage MUCH less frustrating when entertainment is concerned.
I hope this helps!

Very nice package
The main reason why I swapped out my Harmon Kardon receiver for this one was because the HK has no HDMI ports. Other than that, the HK is an incredible system. I chose the Onkyo over many other receivers because it has an HDMI port in its front face - handy for plugging in a laptop. It seems like this should be common to all new receivers but very few have this feature. One thing I noticed right away when trying out the Onkyo is that you must press two buttons to turn off the receiver - the "receiver" button and then the on/0ff button - a bit of an inconvenience but not the end of the world.
While this receiver does have an incredible array of features (all of which have proven to work very well), I did notice while hooking up all the inputs that there are no 110V switched or unswitched outlets. Every receiver I've had before this one has them and I did use the switched outlet in my Harmon Kardon receiver for providing power to a digital temperature controller. This controller turns on a small fan that is placed behind a plasma TV to push out hot air that accumulates in a cavity behind the TV. It was very convenient having the controller turn on when the old receiver was turned on. I'm not sure why Onkyo omitted the outlets but I know now to look for this feature the next time I search for a receiver.
All in all, this is a very good receiver for the money.

Great features for the price
I bought this receiver to replace my Pioneer Elite VSX33TX. I primarily bought it because of the number of HDMI ports but also the up convert feature.
I can't say enough about this receiver. The setup was easy using the included microphone (provided you have a tripod). The sound is great. This receiver is worth the price if only for the up convert feature. My TV has only one HDMI port so I had all sorts of cables connected to the receiver and the TV. When I was done I had one connection to the TV and most everything is a single HDMI cable to the receiver. I also upgraded to a Blu Ray player and the sound and picture quality running through the receiver is great.
Another reason I chose the Onkyo was the HDMI port in the front. I use this to play video from my HD Video camera, plus I can hook up my computer (DVI to HDMI) without trying to get at the back of the receiver.
I am tempted now to go and get an LED 1080P TV now!

Onkyo
Knowing that I was going to upgrade to an hdtv with hdmi, I started shopping for a new receiver to replace my old Yamaha with no hdmi. I really thought I would just buy another Yamaha, but after researching and reading many reviews from many different sources my brand loyalty was soon to change. CNET gave very favorable reviews for this Onkyo with no downside at a very good price for what you get. Knowing that the Yamaha, Sony, Denon and others had lukewarm reviews I decided to take the plunge and buy the Onkyo. I am very pleased with the receiver. It sounds great! The audysey sound was easy to follow which allows the receiver to dial the sound right for the sweetspot of where you will be sitting. The onscreen display mades setup very easy. I also like the idea of less cables which means less spaghetti in my audio cabinet. Since I am no techie, I am sure I am only using a small part of its potential. The remote is easy to use and sync with my cable remote and my wife and kids now have it figured out how to operate it. I put the Onkyo in my cart and noticed after about a week that the price had dropped and without paying taxes I think I saved about 75 bucks and got free shipping.

Very good, but not outstanding
The Onkyo 608 is a very good choice for those who have limited budget to buy a hi-fi receiver. It has good construction quality with very good outputu power. Anyway, it would a little better if it could have a little more output power.
Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2-Channel A/V Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Excellent and very intuitive
This receiver is awesome. The sound quality and the incredible ease of setup is great. I bought a Denon and Sony and both were hard to setup and the sound and video quality PALE in comparison with this Onkyo. I have my PS3 and high def projector hooked up to it and it recognized the PS3 no problem. Terrific clear sound and picture quality even seemed better on my blu ray.

Perfect for older 1080i CRT TVs
This receiver is wonderful. It scales 480P Component (Wii), 1080i VGA (Xbox 360) and 720P HDMI (PS3) sources to 1080i HDMI and gives a lease on life to my Mitsubishi WS-73909 HDTV, which is a 480P/1080i only CRT. The Onkyo TX-SR608 has great sound, great features and it provides tremendous bang for the buck. I did a lot of research and could not be happier with my decision.
Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2-Channel A/V Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Amazing machine, especially at this price point
I waited patiently for the release of this receiver which punches well above its weight, sporting features one would expect to see in the TX-SR7xx series. I don't have a single bad word to say about it and am happy to see the bar significantly raised for entry-level and top end equipment alike.

To help you get a great 3D experience, use our checklist below to ensure that you have everything you need. If you have any questions or want to learn more about 3D, we invite you to visit 3D 101--our center for everything 3D. To get started with 3D, please ensure that you have: A Display The first--and most important--item you'll need is a 3D-ready display--whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect. A Source While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3. Content In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience. 3D Glasses All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display--for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV. HDMI Cable To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a hgh-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation--with bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second)--will be able to carry the 3D signal without any loss of quality. With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
