Elite Forces: Unit 77 doesn't begin well: its non-licensed title, its B-list publisher, and boring box art combine to make the perfect storm of gaming mediocrity: you're really not expecting anything special when a game hits the shelves with absolutely no fanfare.

Maybe, just maybe, the companies responsible hope the DS original will sell on the strength of the game inside. I'll definitely admit I was pleasantly surprised to see a visually impressive experience, but the product as a whole didn't change my first impressions: Elite Forces: Unit 77 is, indeed, gaming mediocrity.

Picture action games such as Mercs or Commando, slow the pacing down to a turtle's crawl, add inconsistent touch-screen controls instead of traditional D-pad movement. That's Elite Forces: Unit 77.

The game has all the makings of an energetic DS action game, but the developers restrict the player with unnecessary stylus actions and create levels that are far too large for the sluggish speed of the characters.

There are more than a dozen missions here which promise a good few hours of gaming…but when you take into account why it takes so long to get through a level, the length of the game doesn't really mean much.

Basically, you're in control of four different characters who, apart from the design of their 3D models, are nearly identical in speed and in basic skills. The differences are in their specialities: one character can lob grenades and disarm mines that only he can see, while another can take out targets in a long-distance sniper mode.

It's a little like Lost Vikings in the sense that you'll have to constantly switch between the four characters to make your way through the missions.
