Fiber Optic Extender: Extend digital video signals to long distances over Fiber Optic Cables

The Fiber Optic Extender is a device which allows transmission of high resolution video over long distances via fiber optic cables. It consists of transmitter and receiver units which are connected through fiber optic cable. The best feature about this video extender is the security of sending the video over fiber, because any break in the line can be easily detected. It protects data transmission from EMI and RFI and also eliminates problems created by lightning and power surges. Since these devices ensure secure transmission, they are used in applications where security and performance are a high priority.

The advantage of a Fiber extender is that they eliminate the need for bulky cables or any additional equipment to boost the video signal. Compliant with DVI which is the emerging standard for video transmission to LCDs, plasmas, LED displays, as well as digital projectors, these extenders are hot pluggable. These units allow you to plug and unplug different displays without having to worry about initializing the software. The different models of these extension devices are DVI fiber optic extender which is available in single link and dual link and the HDMI extender. While the former is a device used for transmitting high resolution digital video over long distances via fiber optic cable, the latter is used to transmit HDTV digital video signals up to 330 feet from the video source.

The difference between the single link and the dual link extenders over fiber optic is the resolutions they support. Single link extenders support WUXGA (1920 x 1200) whereas dual link supports up to 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA+) resolutions for high-end displays. Another model in this category of extenders is the Firewire Optical Extender which allows a user to extend a firewire device up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) using multimode fiber optic cable.
